Glasenbachklamm
The gorge became famous for its fossil finds, above all of an ichthyosaur, and for its outstanding examples of rocks from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic Era. Over 100 years ago, in 1987, fossils of an ichthyosaur that had lived 200 million years earlier were found and described. Later excavations in the 1960s and 70s brought to light more teeth, vertebrae and ribs, which are exhibited today at the Haus der Natur in Salzburg. Numerous other fossils were also found, including ammonites, and are now on display at the heritage museum in Elsbethen, as well as the Haus der Natur. Fossils are still discovered to this day, often being unearthed after the winter snowmelt or landslides.
Glasenbachklamm is exposed to very little direct sunlight, the humidity is high, the temperatures moderate. This makes it an ideal habitat for numerous plant and animal species. Due to its geological and biological uniqueness, 1987 saw the area declared a “Protected Landscape”.
