Dioramas, weapons, uniforms and memorabilia

The Military History Museum is distributed in different locations across town.
The first venue is inside the Cividale Gate’s upper level, in an architectural feature known as a dungeon. The military history of the fortress is conveyed through maps, dioramas, weapons, memorabilia, uniforms and documents from the Venetian, Napoleonic, Austrian and Italian periods.
One section is devoted to the Great War, and it features uniforms, memorabilia and photographs of when Palmanova was part of the rear-guard and was therefore equipped with hospitals, warehouses and training camps for the troops until October 1917.
The exhibits include objects that were in use by the Italian Army during the 20th century, both under the Kingdom of Italy and the Italian Republic.
The second museum venue comprises the outer part of the fortifications, starting from the Cividale Gate. Here you can discover various features of Palmanova’s defences.
The third museum venue is the Governor of Arms’ Palace which was built in 1613. It is located on Piazza Grande (then known as Parade Square). The building houses the administrative offices, while the exhibition rooms are only open when exhibitions are held there.
