Chiusaforte
Today Chiusaforte is the starting point for the nearby Sella Nevea, where there is also the Adventure Park.
Sella Nevea is suitable for both summer and winter holiday.
In winter: cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding and Alpine skiing, snowshoes hiking, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Its ski slopes are connected with the near Slovenia.
In summer: hiking and Nordic walking, in the discovery of Alpine cottages and peaceful corners on Monte Canin or Montasio Plateau.
Its name comes from a fortress ("La Chiusa") that the Patriarch of Aquileia ordered to built here in order to collect the money of the people passing through. Only a few remains of it can still be seen today.
This town also stands next to the ancient pilgrims' journeys coming down "Passo di Monte Croce Carnico". That's why Patriarch Voldorico from Eppenstein ordered the building of a hospital for pilgrims just here.
The strategic importance of this way and the economic advantages of its fortress drew on Chiusaforte the attention of many enemies: the Patriarchs of Aquileia, the Dukes from Austria, the Republic of Venice and Turks as well.
