Pontebba

The name of the place derives probably from the name of the bridge that it used to be over the River Pontebbana in defence of which the first houses were built. A gravestone presently held in the Civic Museum of Udine shows that already in the 2nd century AD this area had represented a strategical point for the goods exchange between Italy and the foreign countries.
In the Middle Ages Pontebba became an important transit place and for its geographical position it suffered for many devastating assaults. In the Patriarchal epoch the hamlet was under the jurisdicion of the Abbey of Moggio and therefore it gained some autonomy only when the Republic of Venice limited the power of the abbey to the religious matters.
During the centuries Pontebba had various misfortunes, and during the two War World its inhabitants were often compelled to leave their hamlet in order to seek safer areas.
Until the First World War the border between Italy and Austria passed through Pontebba: on the old maps one can still read the ancient names Venetian Pontebba, Italian Pontebba and Pontafel to indicate the Carinthian part.
Very interesting is the Parish Church of St. Mary Major that preserves the wonderful wooden altar (Flügelaltar) of 1517, with carved, painted and gilded parts and other parts that are only painted with sacred scenes.
From Pontebba one can leave to the discovery of enchanting mountain valleys and follow pleasant trekking routes.
In winter, the ski facilities of the Tarvisio area can be reached in a short time.
