Moggio Udinese

The origin of the site gets lost in the mists of time, first a Roman settlement, then a medieval castle, afterwards an Abbey.
The Abbey was consecrated by patriarch Voldarico in 1119 and was extremely important in the historic events of Canal del Ferro and Carnia.

In addition to the Abbey dedicated to Saint Gall the Abbot, the complex includes the cloister, the Convent of the Clarisse Sacramentine Nuns, which welcomes pilgrims and visitors, the Medieval Tower, which is also known as the Prison Tower and which now houses exhibitions of various kinds, and the Abbey Library; an Antiquarium will be set up soon.

Just outside the walls, the stone pillory of 1653, one of the last four left in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
But it is in winter that Moggio Udinese reaches its maximum splendour, when the shop windows and the Medieval Tower are decorated by the master Nativity scene craftsmen, who every year display their works here.

The finding in a cloister of an important Latin inscription, together with many other finds, witness an ancient Roman presence on the hill where Moggio today rises, the first village in "Val Canale" along the road that links Udine and Tarvisio.
Moggio is for the first mentioned in a document dated 1072. Like other villages of this valley its name probably has a Slavonic origin. The above mentioned document also talks about a medioeval castle and all these information are confirmed by a more important document of 1084 where Count Cellino, a nobleman from Carinzia and Supreme Master at the Imperial Court, gave to his relative Federico, Patriarch of Aquileia, the feudal estate of Moggio asking him to transform the castle in a cloister.

From this moment the history of Moggio is strictly connected to the Abbey founded in 1084 and dedicated to S. Gallo in 1119. From the 14th century some problems rose for different reasons at first with Venzone and later with the Dukes of Austria. From 1561 until 1566 Carlo Borromeo was Abbot here. And in 1763 a Church was built and dedicated to him. The Abbey was definitely closed in 1777. Moggio was under Austria's rule until 1866.
