A town of engravers
Buja’s Civic Museum offers you the opportunity of discovering the history of the area through archaeological proof, historical artifacts and art exhibits.
The museum displays Roman archaeological finds, earthenware objects, decorative and clothing items dating back to the early Middle Ages, a large number of coins from the Middle Ages and a collection of “Mos”, which are contemporary ornate glass or ceramic beer mugs in the traditional Bavarian style, which testify to the habits and customs adopted by Friulian emigrants around the world; a recent section of the museum focuses on votive medals from the 17th and 18th centuries, a tangible proof of the strongly pious disposition found among the Friulian population of yesteryear.
The Museum of Medal Engraving Art pays tribute to this highly skilled industry in all its diverse forms of expression. It was created with the intent of commemorating Buja’s medal engraving masters who propagated their art around the world. Buja was the birthplace of Pietro Giampaoli and Guerrino Mattia Monassi who became directors of the Italian National Mint and are now considered among the top medal engravers of the last century.
