Colloredo di Monte Albano

Moraine hills and stunning landscapes

The land of three castles

The town’s name is probably derived from the hazelnut trees that used to cover Albano’s “mount”. Albano was a member of the Waldsee family, and the founder of the Colloredo-Mels dynasty.
Colloredo di Monte Albano is located about 3 km away from the cycle trail (with a 30-40 metre climb), and it has 2400 inhabitants. The town offers a choice of eateries, shops, a pharmacy, a bank, and a post office. The municipality comprises three villages: Colloredo, Mels and Caporiacco, each with their own castle - except for Mels where only the tower is still standing - and their churches with their fascinating art and history.
The rivers Cormor and Corno, and the Colloredo and Bevorchiana streams all flow across this area and appear to form a circle around the ancient feudal estate of the Colloredo-Mels family. Nearby there is also the Cornaria brook. The Cormor Valley Horse Trail runs alongside the river Cormor, offering an alternative route for parts of the FVG1 Alpe-Adria Cycle Trail. This unpaved section is suitable for horse-riding, mountain bike riding and hiking. Its environment is characterised by lush flora and fauna interspersed with rural hamlets, historic buildings and country churches.
In the summer, a renowned music festival called “Tango da pensare” (Tango for thought), takes place in the inner courtyard of the castle.
Saints Andrew and Matthias church
Beside the castle there’s a noble chapel built in the 14th century and dedicated to the saints Andrew and Matthias by order of William of Colloredo-Mels Waldsee. In the 17th century the Colloredo-Mels family decided to extend it; the current church reflects the splendour and prominence that the Colloredo-Mels family enjoyed in the 18th century. There is the beautiful 1730 high altar by Giovanni Fosconi, but also art masterpieces such as the Annunciation by Gasparre Diziani, Our Lady of the Rosary by Giulio Quaglio and the Madonna with Belt by Arturo Colavini. The church is also the final resting place of some prominent members of the Colloredo family, the best known among them being the writers Ermes di Colloredo and Ippolito Nievo. In the left nave you can find the funerary monument built in 1729 in memory of Giovanni Battista Colloredo and his wife, featuring a statue representing Melancholia.
Saint Peter’s church
The little church of St Peter in Colloredo stands on a hillock next to the town hall, and not far from the castle. It is an old and simple church consisting of a single hall with two stone-framed entrances. The interior of the church houses some fine frescoes ranging from the 13th to the 15th centuries, which were discovered during a refurbishment.
