Venzone

Admire Venzone, the old town destroyed by the 1976 earthquake and rebuilt as it was in the Middle Ages. A National Monument, Venzone is one of the most extraordinary examples of architectural and artistic renovation. Today it is the only example left in Friuli Venezia Giulia of a fourteenth-century fortified town.

Let yourself be charmed by the imposing medieval walls and by the many historic monuments like the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea and the mysterious, ancient Chapel of San Michele, with its mummies. Their history dates back to 1647, when the "hunchbacked" mummy - the first of about forty extracted from the Cathedral's tombs - was brought to life. The Town Hall is a wonderful example of a Gothic-Venetian palace.

Enjoy the views exploring the paths of the Natural Park of the Julian Pre-Alps or taking a walk along the old Celtic path that links the small fifteenth-century churches around the town.
Discover the ecosystem of the Julian Pre-Alps thanks to the exhibition "Foreste, Uomo, Economia nel Friuli Venezia Giulia" (Forests, Man, Economy in Friuli Venezia Giulia) or visit the exhibition-workshop "Tiere Motus - storia di un terremoto e della sua gente" (Tiere Motus - story of an earthquake and of its people), which reconstructs the events linked to the 1976 earthquake. Don't miss the realistic earthquake simulator and the reconstruction of the collapse of the Cathedral.

Take a journey through time in the Middle Ages, thanks to the Pumpkin Festival. Every year at the end of October the town centre gets crowded with squires, knights and ladies, beggars, musicians, jugglers and many other medieval characters. Pumpkin, however, will be the queen of the event, in all shapes, sizes and recipes.
