The Julian Pre-Alps Regional Natural Park was established in 1996 and extends over nearly 100 km2 in the territory of the municipalities of Chiusaforte, Lusevera, Moggio Udinese, Resia, Resiutta and Venzone in the province of Udine. It includes the highest parts of the ranges of Monte Plauris (1958 m), of the Monti Musi (1869 m) and of Monte Canin (2587 m), being at a lower height only in correspondence of the hamlet of Povici in Resiutta and in the Valley of the Mea Stream in Lusevera. The peculiarity of this area consists of the contact of three different biogeographic regions - Mediterranean, Illyrian and Alpine - which contribute to creating extraordinary biodiversity.
These areas have become a Park owing to their great interest, not only in geological, natural and landscape terms, but also from the historical and cultural point of view, as they are characterised by peculiar features that are difficult to find elsewhere.
Many paths cross the mountains of the park: in summer it is possible to fully enjoy the charm of the mountains and of their colourful flowers, whereas in winter it is nice to follow snow-covered itineraries with snowshoes and skis on, discovering the tracks left by wild animals in the snow.
