Mozartplatz - Salzburg

The Mozartplatz is a rectangular square, very much a landmark in its own right in the historic center of the city of Salzburg, methodically constructed by demolition of various merchant houses under Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau in 1588.

Here on the right bank of the river, the main west-east traffic artery – from the Universitätsplatz via the Alter Markt and the Residenzplatz – once ran through this square, gaining added importance with the building of the Sigmund Gate.

In 1620, Paris Lodron put building efforts in the east of the square in the hands of master cathedral architect, Santino Solari, whilst projects in the north came under the eye of court councilor, Friedrich von Rehlingen. At Mozartplatz 1 we find the Neue Residenz, which houses the new Salzburg Museum.
In the middle of the square is the Mozart monument created in 1842 by Ludwig von Schwanthaler, commemorating the world-famous composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791).
