MI.CO.TRA (Improvement of Cross-Border Public Transport Connections) is a project jointly developed by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the State of Carinthia, with the aim of improving cross-border transport links between Italy and Austria.
As part of the project, a railway service has been established between Udine and Villach, operating in both directions.
On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the service is extended to Trieste, with two daily round trips.
Cross-border tickets can be purchased directly on board the train (cash, debit card/POS, and credit cards accepted) without any surcharge.

The railway stations along the Alpe Adria Cycle Route served by the MICOTRA train are:
Villach Hbf, Villach Warmbad, Fürnitz, Arnoldstein, Thörl-Maglern, Tarvisio Boscoverde, Ugovizza-Valbruna, Pontebba, Carnia, Venzone, Gemona del Friuli, and Udine.
The MICOTRA train stops at Palmanova, Cervignano (Aquileia, Grado), Trieste Airport, Monfalcone, and Trieste only on weekends. From Monday to Friday, cyclists can reach Udine using TRENITALIA services and transfer there to the MICOTRA train.
The railway stations closest to Grado (the endpoint of the Alpe Adria Cycle Route FVG1) are located in Cervignano del Friuli (approximately 20 km north of Grado) and Monfalcone (approximately 24 km away via Adriabike Cycle Route FVG2 / EuroVelo 8).
